Roy Suryo dinilai berlebihan melakukan langkah komplain ke KPI yang berisi komplain tayangan Metro TV yang berisi pemaparan Ruby Alamsyah seputar modus pembobolan anjungan tunai mandiri (ATM) dan cara-cara untuk menghindarinya. Laporan serupa dilakukan Polri.

Ruby Alamsyah, a specialist in Forensic Information Technology, said a data-capturing device was installed in the ATMs in Bali.

“They made an exact duplicate of the card by attaching a gadget at the mouth of the card slot. But that device was meant to be there only for a certain time,” Ruby said.

While the gadget was available online, Wiryana said anybody could assemble such a device.

“It’s basically a magnetic reader. The data is copied by the reader as the card is swiped or inserted into the ATM slot,” he said.

Wiryana added that current antitheft measures at ATM booths needed to be evaluated.

“Some ATMs have a kind of protruding lid that covers the number keys. While it’s meant to protect the user as he inputs the details of his card, the syndicate takes advantage of this by placing small cameras just beneath the lid, which can hardly be detected,” he said.

Dan DeFilippi, an expert on identity theft, recently said that people were often distracted at ATMs and didn’t look closely at the machine. Thieves exploited this fact, he said.

Tigor Nauli, head of the Informatics Research Center at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), told the Jakarta Globe on Friday that recent incidents of ATM skimming were not part of a small-time racket.

He feared a more high-tech method was used.

“People with a lot of money in their bank accounts would rarely use the ATM to withdraw cash,” Tigor said.

“When they want to buy something new, they use their credit cards. If the scheme was just concentrated on ATMs, how many people were targeted? I believe the thieves were targeting more people, not mere ATM users.”

Chief of Detectives Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi recently said that while the ATM skimming attacks were considered to be concentrated in Bali, “there is also a Jakarta resident who reported Rp 70 million [$7,560] was stolen from his account because he went to Seminyak and used an ATM there.”

He added that, so far, there was no evidence of bank insiders being involved.

Bank Indonesia has compiled a list of 200 bank clients whose accounts were tapped for a total loss of Rp 2 billion, said Jeffrey Kairupan, director of the central bank’s Denpasar branch.

Jeffrey said customers at PT Bank Central Asia, PT Bank Negara Indonesia, PT Bank Mandiri, PT Bank Permata, PT Bank Internasional Indonesia and PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia had all reported thefts.
